Huehuetenango is a province in the western highlands of Guatemala that borders Mexico to the North and West. This department of Guatemala demonstrates diversity of both climate and geography. Altitude in Huehuetenange ranges from 300 meters above sea-level to over 3,000 meters in the Sierra de los Cuchumatanes mountain range. Temperatures range from below freezing in the mountain tops to sweltering in the tropical lowland rainforests. In addition to coffee, Huehuetenango’s agricultural products include; wheat, potatoes, barley, alfalfa, sugar cane, tobacco, and a wide range of fruits.
This department began producing coffee in the 19th century. Coffee from Huehuetenango is known for it’s aromatic wine notes; pronounced fine acidity; clean, full body that is slightly rounded and syrupy; and notes of pears and apples.
